The Mommy Drain: Employers Beef Up Perks to Lure back Moms

By Sue Shellenbarger
From The Wall Street Journal Online

Amid the joys and rewards of having a baby, taking maternity leave can touch off a series of losses at work. Stepping out for childbirth often means giving up perks, status, bosses' attention and bonds with colleagues. All this can make it easier to break the umbilical cord -- the one that once bound you to your job, that is -- and to quit or defect to another employer.

One result for employers has been a damaging loss of skilled employees. Among working mothers who return to work within a year of childbirth, the proportion who go back to the same employer is declining, Census data show.

Tips for Negotiating a Better Pay Package

Tips for Negotiating
A Better Pay Package

By Perri Capell

Executives may feel they're at a disadvantage when negotiating the details of a pay package with a new employer. But you can level the playing ground by knowing your priorities and a few facts.

Take Steven McAllister, who recently negotiated a new job as director of sales development for Autodesk Inc., a San Rafael, Calif., software company. He focused on his base salary during the discussions in September, "because so many things are based on your salary, such as the size of your life insurance or your long-term disability payments," he says.

Sandra J. Bishop, President, Executive Solutions

The current soft economy is fraught with a number of changes, including the emergence of a free agency market. For workers to survive, they must become successful free agents. Best-selling author and motivational speaker Tom Peters strongly suggests that this economy has created a renewed need for individual responsibility. This is news to American workers who are overwhelmed daily by feelings of insecurity, fear and anger, and go to work everyday without a sense of trust regarding the stability of their jobs.

12 Tips for Making Small Talk

12 Tips for Making Small Talk
CareerBuilder.com

A study at the Stanford University School of Business tracked a group of MBAs 10 years after they graduated. The result? Grade point averages had no bearing on their success -- but their ability to converse with others did.

Being able to connect with others through small talk can lead to big things, according to Debra Fine, author of 'The Fine Art of Small Talk.' A former engineer, Fine recalls being so uncomfortable at networking events that she would hide in the restroom. Now a professional speaker, Fine says the ability to connect with people through small talk is an acquired skill.

For job candidates seeking an edge, sending interviewers a customized thank-you is critical.

September 19, 2006 (CareerJournal) -- For job candidates seeking an edge, sending interviewers a customized thank-you is critical.

"You're helping to jog their memories of you," says Heather Hamilton, staffing programs manager for marketing and finance at Microsoft Corp. Recruiters typically interview several candidates for a position, she explains, noting that in one week, she might meet with 10 applicants.

Programming Yourself For Success

Programming Yourself For Success — how to program your subconscious mind for high performance.

Your mission statement is always written in the present tense, as though you have already become the person that you have described. It is always positive rather than negative. And it is always personal.

Your subconscious mind can only accept your mission statement as a set of commands when you phrase it in the present, positive and personal tenses. "I am an exceptional salesperson," is a perfect example. After every sales call, you should quickly reread your mission statement and ask yourself if your recent behavior was more like the person you want to be, or less?As a top sales performer, you are always comparing your sales activities against a high standard and adjusting your activities upward. You're continually striving to be better. Every day in every way, you are deliberately working to become more like the ideal person you have envisioned.

Rude to the receptionist? Too bad- you just blew the interview

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Dear Annie: May I please get something off my chest? I am a longtime secretary/receptionist for two senior vice presidents at a big company. We have been doing a lot of hiring lately, and almost all of the new middle-management personnel have been interviewed by one or the other of my two bosses, so naturally they come through my office first.

Let me tell you, Annie, some of these people are unbelievably rude. Either they treat me like a piece of furniture (no hello, no eye contact) or they think I'm their errand girl. (Just this morning somebody sent me out to Starbucks, and it wasn't the first time this happened.) Lately, my two bosses have started asking me for my impressions of job candidates. So far this week, two have been discourteous and dismissive, so I gave both the thumbs-down. Neither is getting called back for the next round of interviews. I don't know how common this is, but please advise your readers who are job hunting that the dummy at the reception desk may be anything but. -Not "Just a Secretary"

Job Hunting? Charm school for Sales Reps?

Sure, skills and professionalism still count--just not as much as personality and "likeability," according to a new survey.

Of course, it's no surprise that human factors matter in a job search. But I always figured that between two candidates with equivalent skills, the job goes to the candidate who was more personable or exhibited better people skills or, in the right setting, just had a better time yucking it up with his or her interviewers.

I never imagined it would be the other way 'round: that between two candidates with approximately the same "likeability" ratings, the job would go to the one with more or better skills.
